Osaka has a large red light district, but strangely enough, no matter how hard you look, you won’t find a soapland.
When you search, all you find are other types of businesses like sexual relaxation service (outcall) and outcall escort services.
That’s because, in fact, there isn’t a single soapland operating in Osaka.
However, if you travel a little further from Osaka, you’ll find several soapland districts.
In this article, we’ll explain why there are no soaplands in Osaka and introduce some of the most popular soapland districts around Osaka.
All of these areas are within day trip distance of Osaka, so be sure to visit and experience a Japanese soapland for yourself.

Osaka has many red light district and many adult entertainment establishments, but surprisingly, there are no soaplands.
Osaka used to have soaplands.
The reason soaplands no longer exist in Osaka is due to government policy and regulations imposed by laws and ordinances. As a result, it has become difficult for soaplands to operate in Osaka today.
From here, we will explain in detail the events of 1990 that led to the disappearance of soaplands from Osaka and why new soaplands are not opening in Osaka.
Soaplands disappeared from Osaka due to the impact of the 1990 International Garden and Greenery Exposition (Hana Expo).
The International Garden and Greenery Exposition (Hana Expo) was an international event that attracted many tourists from overseas, so at the time, Osaka’s red light district were reorganized to maintain public order.
In order to protect the city’s landscape and public safety, soaplands scattered around red light district such as “Kita,” the area around Osaka Station and Umeda, and “Minami,” the area around Shinsaibashi, Namba, and Dotonbori, were targeted for crackdowns and removal.
As a result, soaplands disappeared from Osaka city.
Recreation of red light district is not limited to Osaka; it is repeated throughout Japan whenever international events such as the World Expo, the Olympics, and summits are held.
Japan’s red-light districts have been subject to crackdowns because they “create a bad impression on foreign visitors.”
Another reason you won’t find soaplands in Osaka is that Japanese law prohibits the opening of new establishments.
Japan has a law regarding the entertainment and amusement business known as the “Act on the Control and Improvement of Entertainment and Amusement Businesses, etc.” (Fueiho).
Under this law, soaplands are classified as “Type 1 Business.”
Type 1 Business is defined as “a business that provides services involving contact with customers of the opposite sex in private rooms within a bathhouse facility,” and is clearly distinguished from typical store-based fashion health that provide sexual services.
Enterprise and entertainment businesses are regulated by each prefecture, and in Osaka Prefecture, “Type 1 Business,” which corresponds to soaplands, is currently banned throughout the entire area.
Soaplands disappeared from Osaka around 1990 after the Flower Expo, and new businesses were no longer allowed, meaning there are no soaplands in Osaka today.

While there are no soaplands in Osaka, there are several soapland districts located a short distance outside the city.
Each district has a rich history and has developed into a popular red light district, attracting both locals and tourists.
Here, we’ll introduce three representative soapland districts easily accessible from Osaka: Shiga (Ogoto), Hyogo (Fukuhara), and Wakayama (Burakuri-cho).
Ogoto, located in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, is famous as one of the Kansai region’s leading soapland districts, attracting many male customers from all over the country.
Originally a historic hot spring town established during the Heian period, Ogoto is close to Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei and is a popular tourist destination.
It’s about a 60-80-minute train ride from Osaka, making it easy to return to Osaka the same day after visiting a soapland.
Ogoto’s soapland district is made up of three streets: “Silk Road,” “Golden Gate,” and “Kawasuji Street.” Kawasuji Street, in particular, is lined with many high-end establishments.
While most soaplands employ women in their late 20s and 30s, some even employ experienced women in their 40s or older.
On the other hand, there are also soaplands with young, innocent women, so those seeking youthfulness needn’t worry.
Relax and soothe your fatigue in Japan’s famous hot springs while experiencing the finest hospitality from mature ladies.
